Start with the job and crew
Choose the activity first: cargo, mining, salvage, combat, racing, exploration, medical support or general travel. Then ask how many people will actually be present. A ship that is impressive with a full crew may be slow, vulnerable or frustrating alone.
Check the live ship, not only the brochure
Official role and concept information explains the intention, while live tools show how the current implementation performs. Some planned rooms, modules or mechanics may not yet work as originally described. Compare the Ship Matrix with patch-labelled live data and a recent in-game guide.
Cargo capacity is physical
The stated SCU does not explain doors, lifts, container sizes, manual loading or how quickly the grid can be reached. Open a cargo-grid viewer and check the exact ship before choosing it for contract work. A smaller ship with easy access can turn around faster than a larger ship with awkward loading.
Rent before buying when possible
Renting gives a low-risk way to test cockpit visibility, handling, access and the basic career loop. In-game purchase and rental availability change, so confirm the current location and price before making a long trip.
Pledges, packages and standalone ships
A Game Package includes access to Star Citizen; a standalone ship does not necessarily provide game access on its own. Read the store description carefully. When using CCUs, understand the starting pledge, target ship, insurance and whether applying the upgrade removes an option you intended to keep.
Loaners and temporary substitutions
CIG provides loaners when an owned ship or feature needs a usable replacement. The official matrix was updated for Alpha 4.9, and the loaner can change as ships become flyable or technical problems are resolved. Check the live matrix rather than assuming an old loaner list still applies.
What is the best first ship?
The best first ship is one that supports the activity, crew and budget without making basic travel or recovery difficult. Test a rental or Free Fly ship first where possible.
Does a standalone ship include the game?
Not automatically. Look specifically for a Game Package when the account needs game access.
Why does my hangar show a ship I did not buy?
It may be a temporary loaner. Check the current official Loaner Ship Matrix and the contents of the owned pledge.
